Eighteen years have passed since the August War between Russia and Georgia. More than 400 people were killed, around 2,000 were wounded, and 130,000 people were forcibly displaced — these are the consequences of Russian aggression.
In August 2008, the occupiers destroyed more than 50 villages. Russian aircraft carried out strikes on Gori, the port of Poti, military bases in Senaki and Marneuli, the Vaziani base, an aircraft factory, and a radar station located on Mount Kvishiaini in Tbilisi. To this day, Russian troops control more than 100 Georgian villages, while Georgian citizens continue to live behind barbed wire.
Intense fighting lasted for five days, and the cessation of active hostilities became possible only as a result of increased engagement by the international community.
Eighteen years after the war, Russia still fails to comply with the August 12 agreement, continues the occupation of Georgian territory, and grossly violates human rights on a daily basis.
