“Protecting peace is our top priority. Peaceful development is based on a strong army and defense capabilities. You, veterans, know better than anyone the price and importance of war and peace. Making use of soldiers’ knowledge and sharing your invaluable experience with future generations are vitally important,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said while addressing an event dedicated to Veterans Day.

According to the head of government, more than 4,000 people have received training through a volunteer organization established to support the principle of total defense. Schools are also introducing a pilot subject, “Defense and Security,” for which 18 veterans have undergone specialized training.
“As part of the education program, the government covered 50% of the tuition fees for veterans and their children, allocating a total of GEL 8.6 million for this purpose. Children of fallen veterans and veterans with severe disabilities receive educational grants.
“We have also addressed legislative gaps. Participants in combat operations on the territories of other states have been exempted from taxation on annual income of up to GEL 3,000. Veterans who have internally displaced person status receive additional points when housing is allocated. Free legal services, annual financial assistance for blind veterans, and concessions when accessing public services have also been introduced.
“Transport concessions are already in effect in Tbilisi and major municipalities, as well as on Georgian Railways. Work is continuing to ensure that a similar approach is implemented throughout the country. The authorities will, of course, continue to care for veterans in the future.
“Preserving historical memory is our most important responsibility. A nation that does not remember its heroes cannot build a better future. That is precisely why the state is taking steps to honor their memory: dozens of streets, squares, and schools have been named after fallen heroes.
“Dear veterans and family members of our heroes! I congratulate you once again on this day and thank you for your service to the homeland. I wish you peace, prosperity, and long life,” the Georgian prime minister said.
