Thirty-nine people were killed when two high-speed trains derailed in Spain. About 100 others were injured, some of them seriously. Spain’s Ministry of the Interior reported this on the night of Monday, January 19. The tragedy occurred on the evening of January 18 in the Spanish province of Córdoba.

An Iryo train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and entered an adjacent track, where it collided with an oncoming train heading to Huelva. The cause of the incident is still unknown. According to Spanish media, a total of about 400 people were on board the two trains.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he is closely monitoring the situation. The Spanish royal family also expressed their condolences.

According to Reuters, rescue workers continue to operate at the scene of the tragedy, trying to find survivors among the passengers. In comments to local television, they noted that they are not yet able to assess how many people in the carriages that took the main impact of the collision survived.
