Georgia’s Minister of Internal Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Vakhtang Gomelauri, has resigned. He announced this in a public address, in which he thanked the country’s leadership, his colleagues, and the staff of the Interior Ministry for their joint work.

Gomelauri noted that the decision to resign was not easy for him, but, according to him, the current calm period allows him to devote more time to his family.

"Since 2011, I have been part of the struggle led by Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, which brought about transformative changes in our country. I value and take pride in all the achievements our country has made under the leadership of the government team. Because of this, I remain loyal to this team. And in the future, at any time, I am ready to stand by the state and the ruling team if the need arises," Gomelauri said.

He recalled that he had served as Georgia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Head of the State Security Service, and Deputy Prime Minister.

"Undoubtedly, holding high state office for such a long time requires great effort and energy. Today, when the situation in the country is calm, I have allowed myself to ask the team to release me from my duties — this will allow me to spend more time with my family: my wife, children, and my recently born grandson," he added.

Gomelauri thanked Ivanishvili, noting that his “trust and personal example” had been “a special motivation to carry out my work honestly and contribute to strengthening Georgian statehood,” as well as Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze “and the entire government team,” and also “every employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, every hero police officer, firefighter-rescuer,” and all those with whom he “worked for many years to ensure the country’s safety.” (NEWSHUB.ge)
