Chairman of the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission, Davit Narmania, has shared a post on social media regarding key trends in the energy sector:
"2024 has been marked by numerous significant developments for Georgia's energy sector. Once again, emphasis was placed on the correct state policy in the energy sector and the role of the sector both for the country's economy and from the perspective of international relations.
Among many noteworthy events, it is important to highlight that the 'Khobi 2 HPP,' with an installed capacity of 44.5 MW, has entered into operation, and GNERC activated its electricity generation license. Additionally, as part of investment projects agreed upon with GNERC, a new substation, 'Tskaltubo 500,' was inaugurated, which serves as a key facility for the development of Georgia's electricity transmission network.
The sustainability of Georgia's energy sector is a matter of paramount importance for our country. We have the opportunity and potential to become an energy self-sufficient nation in terms of electricity. Therefore, it is crucial to build regulatory hydropower plants and implement projects that ensure the development of the energy system with minimal environmental impact.
The work on the Black Sea submarine cable project is actively continuing. It has been said many times, and I will repeat, that this is a project that once again highlights Georgia's significant role both within the region and beyond.
We begin the new year with significant news – in 2025, Georgia will be the President of the Energy Community, which is also an important event in the country’s energy history. Under the framework of the rotational powers granted, Georgia will actively participate in the activities carried out by the Energy Community. It should be noted that Georgia’s energy legislation is fully harmonized with the directives and regulations of the Third Energy Package of the European Union. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission maintains close communication with the Energy Community – Commission’s representatives have been actively participating in various working groups for years, and a GNERC member led the Energy Community Regulatory Board for a two-year term. Currently, a GNERC representative leads one of the Community’s key working groups.
One of the main values for the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission is transparency and openness in its activities. In 2025, we will continue to actively collaborate with relevant organizations to improve the regulation of the energy and water supply sectors and enhance the quality of services," writes the Chairman of GNERC
